Port 111

Q: What is port 111?

Maps RPC services to their dynamic ports (portmapper) RPCBind (portmapper) on port 111 tells clients which port each RPC service (NFS, NIS, etc.) is listening on. It is required for NFSv2 and NFSv3. When exposed to the internet, it leaks information about running services and can be used as an attack vector. It must be accessible only within the local LAN and blocked at the perimeter firewall.
