What does the Malware & Virus Scanner do?

The Malware & Virus Scanner analyses files, URLs, domains and IPs via VirusTotal using 70+ antivirus engines and blocklists simultaneously. Within seconds you get results from Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET, Symantec, Microsoft Defender and dozens more.

What you can scan

  • 📄 File — exe, zip, pdf, doc, image and more (up to 32 MB)
  • 🔗 URL — Full URL to check for phishing/malicious content
  • 🌐 Domain — Reputation, categories and threat history
  • 📡 IP — IP reputation, ASN/country and malicious activity detection

When should you use it?

  • You received a file (exe, zip, pdf, doc) from an unknown source
  • Suspicious link in an email or SMS before you click it
  • Checking a domain before trusting it (purchase, registration)
  • Investigating an IP that appears in your logs
  • Suspicious email attachment before opening it

How does it work?

The item you submit is sent to the VirusTotal API, where it is analysed in parallel by all antivirus engines and threat intelligence sources. The scanner monitors progress in real time and displays detailed results as soon as the analysis is complete.

Interpreting the results

  • ✅ Clean — No engine detected a threat. Considered safe.
  • ⚠️ Suspicious — 1-2 engines flagged something. Likely a false positive — verify with additional methods.
  • 🚨 Malicious — 3+ engines confirm a threat. Do NOT use it.
A single detection may be a false positive. Always check the context — if only 1/70 engines flags it and it is a lesser-known provider, it is probably a false alarm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do submitted files/URLs remain private?
No. Anything sent to VirusTotal becomes available to their community. Do not submit files or URLs containing personal data, passwords or confidential information.
What is the maximum file size?
Up to 32 MB per file. For larger files use virustotal.com directly.
How long does the analysis take?
For files and URLs: typically 1-3 minutes (queue + parallel analysis). For domain/IP: instant response (VirusTotal already has the data cached).
What does the reputation score mean for a domain/IP?
It is a number computed by VirusTotal based on community votes and detections. Positive = good reputation, negative = suspicious, 0 = neutral/unknown.
Does this replace an antivirus?
No. It is an additional check — it does not protect your system in real time. Always use a local antivirus solution.
